
Throat Cancer & Your HealthThroat cancer involves cancer of the part of your throat just behind your mouth. Throat cancer is usually painless in its early stages or may have minor symptoms.
Throat cancer has some alternate names like vocal cord cancer, laryngeal cancer, cancer of the glottis, cancer of the pharynx, vocal cord cancer and others.
Throat cancer occurs when the normal cells within the throat undergo a transformation whereby they grow and multiply without normal controls. The growth of abnormal cells can prevent normal function of vital organs or spread throughout the body, damaging essentials systems. Throat cancer involves tumors on the tonsils, vocal cords, voice box (larynx) and at the base of the tongue.
Causes of Throat Cancer
Cancer of the throat occurs as a result of damage to the DNA in the mouth and throat cells. Using tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption can damage these tissues. The combination of smoking or chewing tobacco and excessive drinking creates a much higher risk of oral and throat cancer.

After controlling for other risk factors for throat cancer, such as drinking and smoking, an analysis revealed that people who had prior infection with HPV were 32 times as likely to have this cancer as those with no evidence of ever having the virus.
Some of the other factors for the occurrence of this cancer are the enlargement of the thyroid gland called chronic goiter. This cause may be due to the radiation exposure and the family history of cancer or the genetic predisposition.
